Oyama Jinja Shrine Map

❶Main Hall

The shrine was built in the ancient sangensha nagare-zukuri ("streamlined roof") style characterized by its a simple yet solemn architecture. The brick wall on the right side facing the main shrine is unusual in that it is decorated with the crest consisting of a circular plum flower and swords. This is the first structure in Kanazawa that was built using bricks.

❷Worship Hall

Tiled Gable Roof

This coffered ceiling with beautifully painted udumbara flowers in each room. This ceiling was formerly built in the Kanaya Goten residence before being transferred to the shrine. The beam was also formerly built for the Kanaya Goten, and is a single piece of zelkova tree about 30cm thick with a magnificent carving of a plum flower crest decorated with rich colors.

❸Oyama Jinja Shrine Gate

(Designated Important Cultural Property)

Built in 1875, this gate is famous for incorporating Japanese, Chinese, and Western styles of architecture, and is a historic icon of Kanazawa City alongside the Kenrokuen Garden. The first layer is made of andesite, and the outer third layer is decorated with stained glass-like diamantes on four sides that would be lit to serve as a lighthouse for ships in the Sea of Japan. Additionally, the lightning rod built on the third layer is the oldest of its kind in Japan.

❹Statue of Maeda Toshiie

Maeda Toshiie served the daimyo Oda Nobunaga as a member of his Aka-horoshu from a young age. Because of his mastery of the spear, he was nicknamed "Yari no Mataza," and was feared by enemy forces.

❺Monument of Matsu

Matsu is said to have been a woman of many talents including in education and martial arts. Her mother was a sister of Lord Toshiie's mother thereby making her a cousin of Lord Toshiie. After Toshiie's death, she adopted the name Hoshunin.

❻Shrine Office

This new office was completed in the fall of 2015. It features an open, glass-walled design, and is equipped with displays showing seasonal scenes of Kanazawa Castle and other tourist attractions in the city.

❼Kanaya Shrine

Enshrined here is the second lord of the domain, Lord Toshinaga Maeda, as well as the third to seventeenth lords, their heads of households, and their wives.

❽Oyama Jinja Shrine West Gate

This gate was originally located in front of the Former Utatsuyama Shokonsha Shrine, and was moved to these premises in 1963. While Kanazawa Castle was frequently destroyed by fire, legend claims that this gate survived because the two dragons at the gate called for water. Today, it serves as a valuable reminder of the Momoyama-style palace architecture.

❾Oyama Jinja Shrine Garden

This chisenkaiyu ("circling the pond") style garden was inspired by ancient "bungaku" instruments and was built for the former Kanaya Goten residence.
The water was drawn from the Kenrokuen Garden through a canal built by the order of the third generation lord Toshitsune, which opens up to the manmade Kyō-onbaku waterfall. Today, the waterways have been cut off, and instead, a well was dug to draw out groundwater into the pond.
